Did you know the third Thursday of the beginning of every quarter is “Get to Know Your Customers Day”?

This is a great content marketing opportunity. Content marketing is all about telling compelling and relevant stories and having valuable conversations. So, “Get to Know Your Customers Day: offers an opportunity to engage with our prospects and customers and let them know how important they are and how much we appreciate them.

Plus, most of your competition WON’T be doing anything, so you have a chance to break though the noise and grab the attention of your audience.

Part of creating content that tells great stories about your brand and spark conversations people want to engage in is understanding what they want and who they are. The better you know them the better you can create the RIGHT content to educate them and more successful your content marketing efforts will be.

Here are a three quick tips for getting to know your customers better:

#1. Decide what you want to know about your target audience.

For example, do you want to know how they are talking about a particular problem or challenge? Are you looking for insight  into what they like or dislike about your industry, product, service? Think about your goals for your business. If you are launching a new product or service in 6 months, you may want to use this as an opportunity to find out what to include in your offering to make it an irresistible, “no brainer” buy.

Once you have identified what kind of information you are looking to capture, now it’s time to seek it out.

#2. Visit their Hangouts and Listen:

Now, we know that many of our customers hang out on Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In etc.. But, many times these are not the places they feel comfortable being vulnerable. If you are marketing to other business owners or professionals, they may not respond to the “what’s your biggest challenge” question for fear of ruining their “expert” status.

You need to find out where they feel safe to share their deepest challenges. Forums and chat-rooms provide some valuable insight into what’s keeping your audience up at night, thus helping you create ways to serve them better.

Forum, chat-room blog and social media comments offer great ways to come up with hot content, headlines and even product ideas. Create a swipe file of comments you can use to make your content more appealing and relevant. After all, it’s in their own words. [/box]

#3. Invite them to a Virtual Networking Party

Invite your customers and those you want to be customers to a networking event on your Facebook or Twitter page. Who doesn’t love FREE exposure?

Allow them to introduce themselves and share what they do, why they love what they do, what transforms for people as a result of their products or services. Ask that they comment and support others who attend as well. This will help it become more of a conversation than a bulletin board.

Most entrepreneurs get so caught up in creating solutions they “think” people want that they never take the time to actually “know” what they need. It’s important that we understand that our business exists to solve a REAL, not imagined problem. Just like a superstar is nothing without fans to support them, our business in nothing without customers willing to buy from us.

What are some other suggestions or ideas for getting to know our customers better?
