Do You Have Email Marketing Anxiety? 5 Tips to Help You Hit That Send Button with Confidence

Are you afraid to hit send on your marketing emails?Do you need some email marketing tips to soothe your anxiety around communicating with your list?

So, someone has signed up for that awesome free offer you’ve worked your butt off to complete.

Now what?

Oh, right! Now you have to build a follow-up campaign to keep them engaged and prepare them to take the next step in working with you.

Okay, so you’ve written your first few follow up emails and now all you have to do is load em’ up and hit send….

Go ahead….

Awwwh, there, there, it’s okay.

It’s normal to have a little anxiety about saying the right things to get your subscribers to know, like and trust you enough to try, buy and refer you.

I mean, the pressure, whew!

But, it’s possible to hit send with confidence. Here are 5 simple tips to help you do it.

Tip #1: Know your BIG WHY for sending your message

Purposeless content wastes time, energy and money.  Why are you sending this email?

Knowing the answer to this question will help ease some of the anxiety you feel about whether what you’re sending your subscribers is the right thing for you and them.

Darren Rose, founder of ProBlogger wrote a post I love called “5 Things to Email Your Subscribers About Today“and it sits right beside me when I’m crafting my subscriber emails.

  1. Give Them Something
  2. Ask Them  Something
  3. Tell Them Something
  4. Alert Them to Something
  5. Invite Them to Something

Think about what’s happening in your business and what the needs of your audience are and craft communications that serve both.

Tip #2: Add Value, Don’t Just “Send on Schedule”

This tip came courtesy of another blog post I loved on this subject by Carol Lynn Rivera. Carolyn cautions  “Don’t Hit That Send Button! 9 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Doing Any Email“.

This one falls in the top 3 on her list and for good reason. Your communication with your customers can’t just be routine. You must find a way to provide relevant information they will love you for sending them.

If it’s just about pushing out any ole offer or an update about how cool your vacation was people will unsubscribe faster than you can say ….well I couldn’t think of anything clever to bring it home, but you get the point, right?

Tip #3: Don’t Be Afraid of Unsubscribes

Another hot button reason you may be shy about pulling the trigger on your emails is your fear of people hopping off your list. Unsubscribes can make you feel bad, especially the ones that come with “opinions”.

My advice?

Fuuugett about it!

Unsubscribes are a gift. First of all if they opt-out, they may not have been there for the right reasons in the first place.

Mine your list to ensure its filled with the right people –

  • Spies – Many people (Myself included) sign up for things not because they are really interesting in it, but because they are researching
  • Tire Kickers – These are people who just want stuff for free and if your goal at any point is to get them to buy something, they’ll get offended and irritated and move on. Which is what you want. You don’t want them on your list. You want people who are ready and willing to buy what they need to solve whatever problem they need solved. You want…
  • Taste Testers: These are people who are hungry and signed up for something you offered them that wet their appetite and they’re craving more. These are the folks you want more of.

Unsubscribes can also help you figure out what’s working and what isn’t so don’t take it personal. Just keep working to improve your communication until it starts getting you the results you want.

Tip #4: Create a Great Call to Action

No point in sending an email if, you don’t ask your subscribers to do something. If you don’t ask, they won’t act. Creating any type of content online (or off, for that matter) should aim to convert.

According to the article “Are Your Calls to Actions Missing These Proven Formulas”, by Mark Sherbin, one of  three main categories calls to actions or (CTAs) fall under.

  1. Soliciting the Sale – Obvious, right? Use this type of call to action to ask your reader to buy something.
  2. Capturing the lead – These types of CTAs are typically used to get people to subscribe to your list.
  3. Nurturing the Relationship- Ideal for communicating with your subscribers or social network community.

Your CTAs are tied to your WHY. If you are sending a launch email, you may ask people to visit a launch page where they can opt-in to get a great deal on a new offering. In this example, you are still capturing a lead.

And since they are signing up for a product launch, you know what they are interested in and you can tailor your messages to create laser targeted content special for their interests and needs.

Tip #5: Practice Imperfect Progress

Listen, it’s not the end of the world if you mess up an email or people unsubscribe. The most important thing is that you move forward. Learn as you go. That’s the only way to grow.

If you find yourself becoming paralyzed by fear and falling into a spirit of procrastination. Remember, practice makes perfect. It may take some time to find your voice and how and when to communicate with your audience.

Embrace the process and keep moving forward. Find what works, tweak what doesn’t and watch the anxiety melt away. Soon you’ll be sending smart and effective emails like a marketing ninja.

Hiiigh Yaaa! (It’s weird, I never tried to write the sound “hiiigh yaaa” before. I pulled that off though , huh?)
