Hater-Aid: How to Stop Haters From Ruining Your Progress

This is a public service announcement for all the haters that motivate us and let us know we’re on the right track. 

A few weeks back, I received a complaint from someone who tried to sign up for my list. They were frustrated by my opt-in process and felt they had to go through too much to get a message.

The email read…

“This process to just get a message through is incredibly frustrating.”

Innocent enough right? So, I put on my customer service hat. I always respond to complaints and compliments. I figure if you take time out of your day to send me a message, it’s only right that I take time and care to respond. So, I wrote an apology, explained why the process was set up that way and made sure she got what she signed up for.

I sent the subscriber the following response:

Hello [Identity Withheld],

I am really sorry the sign up process has frustrated you. Technology is lovely, but sometimes it can suck 🙁

My email service requires confirmation of opt-in to protect subscribers from spammers and reduce spam complaints because you have confirmed you were the one requesting the email.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If for any reason you were unable to access the content you needed. It looks like you are trying to access the Observance Calendar. Here it is for your convenience:[link]

I told myself it must have been someone new to the marketing process and did not understand how auto-responders work. So, because my sister nicknamed me “Kenya 4G” lol, I Googled their name. I do this to ensure that the people signing up are in my target audience.  To my surprise, not only was this person not a newbie, they were a pretty prominent figure in the digital marketing world. I mean she was an “it” girl, okay!

Hmmm…why would someone who is obviously knowledgeable about how online marketing works, take time out of their day to send such a complaint? It reminded me of another person months ago that signed up after my site was hacked. The link to the delivery page was broken. I had several people email me about the problem graciously. Then there was one lady screaming at me in caps “IS THE GIFT BAG AN ERROR PAGE!”  lol

Wow, people have issues. I am just thankful crazy shows up before you enter into a working relationship with them. I have seen a seemingly sane person go bat crazy with little to no provocation…

Since, to my reply, she never said another word, I concluded that she may have been a hater or a spy who became angry when she could not get the information fast enough.  Who really knows?

Haters will go to great lengths to hate you. As comedian Kevin Hart hilariously points out, you can’t get mad at a hater for hating, “It’s their job”. And they’re good at it.  See, haters hate out of jealousy or envy. There is something about your success, your footsteps that makes them nervous and insecure. So, to make themselves feel better they hate on you.

A hater’s job is to make you feel inadequate in some way.  And they come in a variety of colors.

It’s important to understand what a hater looks like because, they can veil themselves as “constructive criticism”. This is especially true when it comes from someone you are close to like a friend or family member.

Moment of Transparency

I’ll admit, I fell victim to letting this get to me even a little. But, it gave me confirmation that I was on the radar. Years ago, I would not have been getting any complaints or praises because I was too freaked out to hit the send button.

Many times we procrastinate on putting or brand message out there. We try to make things perfect so that we can avoid criticism as much as possible. But, I have learned that it is unavoidable. There is a world full of “Debbie downers” who’s only mission is to make others just as miserable as they are.

I have seen really brilliant and successful people get ripped to shreds by people who are envious of their success. The more successful you become, the more the haters come out. So, the next time someone hates on you, give’em a little hater aid and keep it movin’!
